Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in Thailand, Situation Update, No. 1 (2018)

 

A total of 2,733 cases with zero death have been notified throughout the country between 1 January 2018 – 5 February 2018. The Morbidity Rate (MR) equals to 4.18 per 100,000 population. Greatest number of cases occurred in children aged 1 year old (27.88 %) followed by those aged 2 years old (24.33 %) and 3 years old (17.23 %).

 

97.6% of cases were Thai, followed by Other (1.4%), Burmese (0.5%), Cambodia (0.3%), and Laos (0.2%).

 

Top 5 provinces observed with the highest Morbidity Rates were as follows:

1. Chiang Rai (MR = 20.60 per 100,000 population)

2. Chiang Mai (MR = 15.26 per 100,000 population)

3. Phayao (MR = 13.44 per 100,000 population)

4. Mae Hong Son (MR = 13.41 per 100,000 population)

5. Lampang (MR = 13.02 per 100,000 population)

                             
Highest Morbidity Rate was reported from the Northern Region (MR = 8.93 per 100,000 population), followed by the Central (MR = 4.79 per 100,000 population), the Northeastern (MR = 1.92 per 100,000 population), and the Southern Regions (MR = 1.89 per 100,000 population).

Outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) occur year-round and occur mainly in young children under 5 years old. Although, most adults are immune, infected children and adults may become ill. Therefore, cleanliness of home, child care center and schools should be maintained properly along with frequent handwashing with soap and water. Sick children with fever and mouth ulcers should stay at home until they are well.
